Why does my dentist pinch and jiggle my cheek when he gives me a shot of novocai!

Question:

Why does my dentist pinch and jiggle my cheek when he gives me a shot of novocain?

The last two fillings I've had done my dentist has pinched and jiggled my cheek while he is giving me the shot of novocain. It hurts so much that I never remember to ask him why, I figure he has to know what he's doing, right?! Does anybody have an official reason as to why this is done?

My FACE cheek kids, not buttcheek! I'd have a whole different set of issues if that were the case! :)

Answers:

The dentist is feeling for land marks in the mouth to help guide the location of the injection. As was previously pointed out, the motion helps distribute the anesthetic more effectively. Also, when the cheek/lip is help taut the needle actually penetrates with less discomfort.
