If it is a permanent or baby tooth they can fix it like your mom said. Glue or something to hold it together. If the main part of the tooth is not damaged they will be able to save it. If you are not having a lot of pain then it probably isn't damaged too bad. They can also put a cap over it to protect it and that is totally pain free. They have medication if it is hurting that you won't feel anything. No matter what the procedure everyone will feel a little nervous. That is normal. You don't want to have to walk around with a broken tooth for too long. It will be okay and good luck.

This really depends on how "broken" the tooth is. If it's just a chip, or small part, they will most likely put a filling in it to repair it. That won't matter if it's a baby or permanent tooth. If it's a little more damaged, they will try to put a crown on it (remove the bad part, and cover it). If it's real bad, they may suggest it gets taken out. If it's a baby tooth, no worries, an adult tooth will grow in eventually and fill in the whole. If it's an adult tooth, they will try to save it before they suggest removing it. It's really hard to know what's wrong without seeing your tooth. Just remember, they will do their best to help you.
