I have really bad toothache after a filling - what can it be?!

Question: I have really bad toothache after a filling - what can it be!?
Well, I had a white filling around 4 days ago and it hasn't stopped hurting!. Yesterday it was fine most of the time, but on the day after I got it filled I had sharp shooting pains down to my jaw!. Today it is really bad, I can't stand the pain and have taken paracetomol but it hasn't worked!.

However, the pain will go away if I bite down or if I swill some water around in my mouth and the filling no longer hurts!. It seems to be worse now since I ate my breakfast and it may be because it had sugar on!. It really does hurt though!. I have had fillings before but they were silver and didn't hurt, but now, it really does hurt so badly I cant not swill water around every few minuted!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

There are a number of possible reasons for your post operative pain!. The filling may be close to the nerve and the deep part of the cavity was not coated with a calcium hydroxide dressing and or glass ionomer base prior to the filling being placed!. White (usually composite) fillings are more technique sensitive than silver fillings!. The material itself is irritant to a live tooth!. White fillings actually contract on setting!. If they are not filled in increments, the setting process can lead to a gap between the filling and the tooth - making the tooth sensitive!. Alternatively, the contraction of the setting can place the tooth under a stress as it draws the sides of the cavity together!. The severity of the pain in your may indicate the need for root canal therapy!. The toothache may relate to the severity of the decay in the tooth, and not dependent on whether a white or a silver filling was used!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

One cause can be an air pocket in the tooth, when the filling is not fully and properly packed tight!.

I've had that happen and the filling had to be redone!.

It can be a nerve that was exposed after drilling and it should heal in a few days!.
If it persists, see your dentist!. Pain killers is not a solution!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It may just be because it had to be drilled out deeper than the last few!. My filling was sore for a week afterwards and very sensitive to things!. I couldn't bite on it for at least 9 nine days and then it was tender!. It may just be normal but if your really concerned i'd suggest calling your dentist back up and asking them about it!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

depends how bad the tooth was when it was filled!. possibly the nerve is dying in the tooth!. or filling wasnt done properly!. as in if moisture got in when it was filledWww@Answer-Health@Com

this can happen if the tooth isnt fillep properly
you will need to get it redoneWww@Answer-Health@Com
