Dry socket is -not- an infection!. It's basically what happens when the clot inside the socket gets dislodged for some reason, so that normal healing does not take place!. The exact cause is not known, but it's more common in women, smokers, and people who rinsed before they should have after an extraction!.

The bone is exposed to your mouth, which is what is causing the pain!. You might notice a bit of an odour, because food can get trapped in the space!. The socket can then -become- infected!.

The best thing to do is to go back to the dentist - they can give you painkillers, and clean out the socket to prevent infection!. If it's already infected (the socket will look red and inflamed, and may have pus) they can prescribe antibiotics!.

They can also pack it with something like Alvogyl - this will give you some relieve as it contains an anaesthetic, and has other components to prevent infection!. However, sockets packed with Alvogyl take longer to heal, as a foreign body is present!.

The other option is for the dentist to try and get it to heal naturally - to do this they numb you up and get the socket to bleed, then you continue just like after you got the tooth out (ie avoiding rinsing, alcohol, smoking, strenuous exercise etc), and the socket should heal like normal!. The advantage is that healing is faster, but the disadvantage is that it wont be as comfortable as if it was packed!.

In the meantime, take painkillers like Ibuprofen, and keep the socket clean by rinsing after meals with warm saltwater, and trying to avoid eating on the affected side!.

All the best! :)Www@Answer-Health@Com

My first question is: "What did you do (or not do) that you were told to not do (or to do)!?"

My next question is: "Why are you asking us instead of calling your Dentist!!?"

"Dry Socket" is an infection!.!.!.Oral infections are extremely dangerous, since an infection there will rapidly spread if not taken care of as rapidly as possible!.

I've never had one, so I don't know if the old Salt Water gargle will work for you or not!. In any case, if you choose to do the booze route that someone else recommended, remember it's rinse and spit, not drink and guzzle!.

Call your DDS and book an Emergency Appointment!. It won't be cheap!.!.!.especially being as it is late in the afternoon on a Friday!.!.!.but the fact that it could theoretically save your life, will make the bill worth the agony of paying!.

Good Luck!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Pretty serious ay!.!.!.!.

Last anything from 5 days to 2 weeks!.!.

it is always advised you go back to your dentist, they will give you antibiotics and see what they can do!.!.!.

Be sure to gently swril warm salt water around your mouth every two hours, and with a dry socket i would suggest after every time you eat!.!.!.

you really don't wanna get an infection in there!.!.!.

take some ibuprofen or nurofen to ease the pain!.!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

True dry socket is not an infection!. It is exposed bone/ nerves!. Your dentist should pack the socket with gauze and medication as well as have you on a narcotic pain killer!. The pain turns a corner at day 10, once the skin covers back over the bone and nerves!. Call your dentist!. That's what you pay for!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Go back and get them to get you something for it because it is something thay can give you for it and it will only take like a week or two before the pain goes away!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Get your dentist to prescribe strong pain killers, if he won`t go to your GP and explain what has happened, I know what you`re going through, so very sorry for you, hug!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
