Is he still going to do a root canal or not?!

Question: Is he still going to do a root canal or not?
I went to the dentist on an emergency appointment as two fillings have broken and cracked at the sides of my teeth so was unable to eat and was in agony. Previously he said that I may need a root canal on one side. However today he didn't mention it and just did two fillings which I think are temporary as they were white ones. I have no swelling or pain anymore so is there even any need for a root canal? He also didn't give me antibiotics as I don't need them as not in pain.
I did want to ask but felt so nervous about the whole experience.

Hello
did he x ray your teeth to see if your teeth needed a root canal? Do you have to go back for any more work? If you have to go back in the next few weeks it maybe for a root canal. Having white fillings are normal and they can be permanent. I have many permanent white coloured fillings. A root canal normally takes several visits so if your tooth does need a root canal, you must have another appointment lined up. If he just filled the teeth and said nothing and he never said the fillings were temp and you do not have another appointment lined up soon, it is looking like they are permanent fillings. He would of said if they were temp ones. He would of said be careful eating on them and try eating on other side and do not eat sticky foods etc.

Check if you have another appointment lined up. Even if you do need a root canal, do not be frightened. I have had 2 and they did not hurt and were no worse than having fillings done. The injection hurt( but only for 3-4 seconds) and then you are numb and will not feel the root canal being done. Root canals tend to take longer than a normal filling and that is the worst thing about it, laying there with your mouth open for a long time.

So try not to worry and if the worst happens and you need a root canal, it is not that bad, it just takes time.

update- sounds like you do not need a root canal then as he would told you if you did need one. Good news .

Hope that helps

myself as I have had loads of dental work done

If the nerve didn't get infected and the tooth is still sound, then no, you don't need a root canal.

Lucky you, they cost a fortune. I got one and it was $1500. And two crowns, $1500 each.

Only your dentist knows the answer.

I also get really nervous at the dentist, so I can understand that you didn't ask about this at the time- I imagine you were grateful to have escaped with just fillings, and not be in any more pain!

Hopefully you're already booked in for another check up in 6 months.I suggest that you get back in touch if you have any more problems in the meantime, and just try not to worry if you're not in pain! If you want to talk to the dentist about the root canal issue, then you can use your next check-up to discuss this- and make sure they know how nervous you are about it, so together you can look at ways to manage your anxiety. A good dentist will know how to help nervous patients- if you don't think they will appreciate this, look for another dentist.
