I Think I might have TMJ?!

Question: I Think I might have TMJ?
My jaw is sometimes hard to open and it hurts to chew. I used to wake up and it would not open wide at all and i would have to move it around in weird ways to get it to open. what is the treatment? Do i need to see an orthodontist? it's gotten a lot better recently but still bothers me occasionally. Would i have to get surgery? oh and i have braces too. And i have chains connected to my teeth to pull them down. I think they were my bicuspids.

Answers:

Your treatment will depend mostly on what is causing the problem. For example, if you grind your teeth, you might be straining your jaw, and your dentist can make you a bite plate (mouthguard) to keep your teeth from clenching together and aggravating your jaw. If your pain is because your jaw is misaligned, you might need new orthodontics or special bite splints to help improve the jaw alignment. If your jaw problems are stress-related, you might be advised to take it easy (meditation etc. helps). Surgery is generally used as only a last resort (ie. you can't open your jaw at all)- your dentist will suggest other methods first, so see them for their advice.

PS: TMJ is the name for your jaw joint (temporomandibular joint), so technically we all have TMJ!!You're suggesting TMD (temporomandibular joint disorder). Common mistake ;P

I have had this problem for years, but all of a sudden it seems to have sorted itself out on its own. Do you have any bad habits that might be causing it? (nail biting, grinding teeth) If it turns out to be teeth grinding, they might make you a plastic retainer, that's what they did for me. (i also have a lip biting habit. I recently stopped doing it and found that my jaw stopped clicking and locking, so there was no need to use the retainer in the end :)
