So I went to the dentist to ask if I had any cavities or if it was sensitivity..!

Question: So I went to the dentist to ask if I had any cavities or if it was sensitivity...?
And let me start by saying that I see black specks/marks on a couple of my teeth, my dentist informed me that its just surface staining and to be careful and continue cleaning with care, but she is watching them. Now for the past year and a half she's also been saying that I have cavities forming between my teeth, but they don't need to be filled yet... Do you think she's making this up to make sure I floss more? Because I heard that as soon as a cavity shows, it should be filled... And I know dentists love their money so it's not like she'd say no to doing it if there was something there... She told me I'm good for now as long as I continue to keep a good hygiene... Do you guys think maybe she's lying to make me do a better job on my teeth?

I am a dentist. Dental decay shows up before a tooth needs a filling. Dental decay in enamel can harden back up. This is probably what she is seeing. Once dental decay goes through the enamel it won't harden back up because the dentin (what is under the enamel) is less inorganic (it isn't as hard) so decay spreads fast. Enamel will absorb Fluoride much more readily than dentin and it will have access to much more fluoride because it is on the surface of the tooth.

Especially decay between the teeth shows up before you need a filling this is where mechanical removal of plaque at least one time a day with floss followed by brushing or a fluoride mouthwash like ACT (it stands for Anti-Cavity Treatment) will help those lesions harden back up over time. Fluoride is especially beneficial to decay on smooth surfaces of the teeth like between the teeth.

So get to flossing and if I were you I would floss two times a day and brush every time you eat (at least three two really isn't enough).

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure and there is nothing a dentist can give you that is as good as what mother nature can give you. Especially decay between the teeth is a very invasive procedure to the teeth to fix. Decay on the top isn't so hard, but still you want to avoid any cavities you can avoid.

One last thing, avoid diet sodas and regular sodas and juices as much as you can. I believe the nubmer one factor to getting decay is what one drinks so I recommend tea with no sugar and water for your main drinks.

I hope that helps and best of luck. Remember 1 ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

How long have you been going to this Dentist? A Professional reputable dentist would clear any cavity as soon it shows
its a Family dentist or what,, ask around and see if you can see another reputable dentist but don't mention anything about this other one till you get second opinion, dentist usually have a brotherhood code or usually know each other if they are in same town. Good luck
