Cavity curiosity/question?!

The symptoms of a cavity are the same whether the cavity is small, large, or large and deep enough to require a root canal. A cavity is a cavity, but some cavities require more treatment.

The basic symptom of a cavity is that it is there. In other words, there is decay within the tooth, which is shown by the dentist's probe or by an x-ray. If the cavity is large enough, it may be noticeable in the mirror, but that is not common. Sometimes a cavity is painful; that's what a toothache is about.

As to whether you will need a root canal, it depends on where the decay has reached. If it is into the roots of your tooth, a root canal would be necessary to save the tooth. If it is only in the upper part of the tooth, you probably won't need a root canal. In any event, root canals are nothing much to worry about any more. They take more time (and cost more money) than an ordinary filling, but the pain is minimal these days.
