Am I getting old, or is it something more?!

Question: Here's my symptoms that my dr says are due to normal aging and working at a computer all day (I'm almost 40).

My upper arms (front and back - closest to the shoulder) and shoulders are sore a lot and hurt when I move my arms. I have a 25 lb dog that refuses to jump up on the bed, so I have to lift her onto the bed 2 or 3 times a night. It's getting to the point where I can't!

Fingers and wrists hurt when I lift anything where my wrist is turned sideways - like lifting a coffee cup, coffee pot, or plate.

My figers hurt when I write with a pen.

My shoulders and elbows hurt when I lean on my elbows at my desk.

Is this what I have to look forward to? lol Is this normal the older we get or should I get a 2nd opinion from a new doctor?

Besides the fact that it sounds like you have the beginnings of carpal tunnel syndrome, you have a few other repetitive stress injuries which need to be addressed.

The wrists and fingers are caused by the way you're sitting at the computer. You need to get your workplace examined for ergonomic health and make improvements if necessary. Also, you can wear wrist guards specially made for carpal tunnel syndrome -- they will hold your wrists in the correct position so you don't hurt yourself all day.

The arms and shoulders are likely caused by lifting the dog in the way you do. Please invest a little money in a step ladder for your bed. PetSmart and Petco carry them, as well as a few other retailers. The link below is from Petco's pages on pet steps, but you can find similar products elsewhere.

If I could make a suggestion, I would suggest therapeutic massage. Ensure you visit a *licensed* massage therapist, preferrably a member of the ABMP (Association of Bodywork and Massage Professionals). You can visit the ABMP website to get a list of members in your area. Use the Find a Massage Therapist link at the bottom of the page.

Good Luck!

Crikey !! i'm 44 and work as a medical typist at a computer 3 days per week and don't have any of those symptoms ...... yikes, get another opinion!!

Sounds more like Ricketts to me............ ensure you are getting enough calcium rich foods in your diet ie: leafy and green vegies, sardines and salmon, nuts and seeds and also ensure that you are getting enough vitamin D (either sunshine or cold water fishes such as sardines, salmon, tuna and whiting)........ without Vitamin D in your system none of the calcium you ingest will ever be properly assimilated (absorbed by the body).

More sunshine will automatically make you feel enormously better, just that warm feel good factor i guess combined with the fact that it aides in calcium absorption.

Symptoms of calcium deficiency are as above and also without calcium your bones will become brittle, you will be moody and cranky and also have digestive troubles.

Increase your intake of magnesium rich foods as well as calcium and magnesium work together for cardiovascular health.

ie; leafy and green vegies, nuts and seeds, wholegrains and cereals and cold water fishes.

Magnesium is also essential for healthy nerves and muscle functioning and will aide in any constipation issues you have.

CHEERS
?

good health to you?

At age 40? No, not in the least. Either your doctor isn't listening to how much it hurts, or he's not a very good doctor.

There are a few natural products that help with joint health if you'd like to try to help the joint problems. The most popular are Microlactin, Tart Cherries, Glucosamine, Chondroitin, MSM, Hyaluronic Acid, Litozin (Danish Rose Hips), and Bromelain.
The only thing to really watch out for is allergies. Glucosamine is typically from Shellfish and Microlactin is from milk. As long as you're not allergic to those, you should have no problem. Good luck!

Don't you have a couple of full boxes that you could turn upside down and make steps out of for your dog? That's what my cat has.

I don't know whether it's cold where you are and yor body has just got a chill or if the body is just stressed and you're starting to get carpal tunnel, or if you're getting spine degeneration which would affect your arms and neck, if you're getting arthritis or of your dog is just weighing more these days. I don't know, maybe you want to see a chiropractor and get a realignment..

Let me guess, the doctor is allopathic (MD)? I'm over 45 and don't have those symptoms even with a spinal birth defect that left me with missing bones! I spend plenty of time at the computer, lifting heavy objects, etc., too. I'm a mom of 4, three grown, and just don't have time for that kind of ailment! I suspect it is this docs simple way of saying he either A. doesn't know how or B. doesn't want to deal with it. If you want a doc's help go for the 2nd opinion; find a good naturopath, or even chiropractor.

I'd say that in addition to other responses, you may want to check into supplementing for bone and muscles. An overall B supplement (B50 or B100) may do you a world of good. Also, are you getting enough water a day? A good read: "Your Body's Many Cries for Water" How's your sugar intake? Some of the symptoms sound like sugar overdose to me. Muscles and joints both affected. Cut back on refined sugars, high fructose corn syrup and artificial sweeteners - especially sucralose (Splenda). You can use natural sugars in moderation - turbinado, honey, molasses and Stevia for a substitute.

I have been out on the acreage here clearing with a chain saw, with my husband in the last few weeks. Trust me, if what you have is natural aging, I'd never had that chainsaw in my hand! Boy, am I glad that it is not normal aging.
