Why do you have to be over 45 kilos in weight , in order to donate blood ?!

Question: I got a brochure in the mail today that said you have to be over 45 kilos to give blood. I was considering this and i have been under 45 kilos ( a healthy weight for my 5'2 body ) for most of my life .

So why is that ?

No matter what your weight is, they take the same amount of blood out of you. Well, if you have less weight, you have less blood. They'd be taking a proportionally larger amount of your blood out and it just wouldn't be healthy for you.

because you dont have enough blood to fill up one of the bags and you would pass out, it wouldnt be good

well.. i dont go by kilos in weight so i have absolutely no clue how big or small it is, but im going to say its tiny. and if your a tiny person taking blood from you can make you pass out cause your so tiny!

taking one pint of blood if you are under 45 kg will likely make you pass out immediately because it is a significant amount of your blood where as if you are over 45kg it is less of difference.. and they just take extra precautions because it happened to a few people. lame i know!

I agree with the above answers, but disagree that under 45kg is a healthy weight for you.

45kg = 99 lbs

Ideal body weight for a female that is 5'2" is 50kg.

The amount of blood in your body is proportional to your weight. SO as they are foing to remove just under 1 pint no matter what you weigh, they have to make sure that you still have enough to survive as well!!!
