If you are deprived of oxygen, you suffocate because your cells traveling to the lungs for oxygen and find none. Cells need O2 to live and perform their functions. If you are breathing in something else you might die from that, like another type of gas. Breating carbon dioxide in amounts that are too high can kill you as well- think of CO2 chambers they use to kill shelter animals. They suffocate by not getting any oxygen.
