Does going to a therapist/psychiatrist/psychologist really help?!

Question: Does going to a therapist/psychiatrist/psychol… really help?
I'm trying to convince my very depressed friend to get some help, but it's not going very well because of the negative stigma associated with it I guess
How does talking to a therapist really help someone get better..? It seems kind of awkward to me, talking to someone you don't know about your problems

When you say the negative stigma, do you mean that your friend is already going and finding it of no help, or is not going?

Sarah, it is often easier to talk to a stranger, believe it or not. That person has no preconceptions about you and is trained to read body language and hear the words behind the words.

Just like regular people, some of these therapists etc. can be real dickheads. Others can be fabulous. It's difficult to know who you will click with until you see them.

Depression is a disease just like the flu, only it won't go away by itself. Don't give up on your friend - perhaps you could get her/him to be admitted to a psych ward for a few days for evaluation. That way your friend will have access to several different psychiatrists and he/she will have the opportunity to "sample" different people and see who clicks.

I was hospitalized for 5 days in 2006 in a psych ward because I had attempted suicide (and almost succeeded). With talk and medication, I did get better. I am still on medication and will probably be for the rest of my life, but I can truly say that I am happy.

Don't give up. There is hope.
