How come im so 'down' when I have a good life? ?!

Question: How come im so 'down' when I have a good life? ?
I'm 14. Im in 8th grade, and I have a good life / family and get a lot of what I want.

I don't do drugs or have sex. But on and off through-out the day/week/month/year I'm kinda like depressed.

Sometimes during the day I'm fine and happy, but other times I just want somethin bad to happen to me.

When I'm alone I think about myself being raped, or beaten or etc. (horrible, I know). And often times when I'm in my "depressive mood" I can't put my feelings into words.

I just feel like I want bad things to happen to me, and I really really want it to happen. But when I'm in my good moods which Is maybe 55% of the day I'm just myself & happy.

I don't understand why I think like this. Help? I've been like this for a couple months. And please don't tell me to talk to a doctor/counselor/parent. Thanks.

What you're experiencing is a normal adolescent process. Your hormones are going crazy which is why you may find yourself being very happy one moment and very down another. Your mind is trying to find a rational explanation for why you feel like this because thats the minds job..to find rational explanations for whats happening to you. However, your mind can't find an explanation for whats wrong because its not your experiences/enviromant that is troubling you, its just your hormones readjusting themselves to adult settings which is causing the mood swings. Your mind becomes desperate and starts fantasising about thing which would justify such strong emotions such as beatings etc because physical things are far easier to understand that emotional/hormonal things. If you had experienced things like this, you would be able to explain why you feel the way you do but since you haven't your brain starts fabricating fantasies of such things because what your mind craves more then anything is for things to be simple and understandable. You may find yourself feeling jealous or bitter of friends who have experienced difficult times because at least they have a reason for feeling so depressed and sad whereas you may feel like you are just being self indulgent. But please don't worry, this is a very normal thing, as alarming and disturbing as it may be. Your mind will adjust to the hormonal chaos thats going on in your body and eventually this will all be a distant memory. Don't be afraid to indulge in some fantasies, it helps your mind exercise some of the frustration and confusion it encounters with all your hormones. The important thing to remember is this is normal, you're not going crazy, you're not doing anything wrong and what you're feeling is not in any way abnormal. Teenagers are notorious for being emotional, moody and confused and this is the reason why! Just remember that its just your hormones and don't read too much into it. Take it from someone who has been through it already- it will pass :)

Please, please tell a parent and if that's not feasible, what about a school counselor? You say your life is good. Your parents should be able to help, if you think you have a great family. Don't be afraid to talk to them. You may be surprized at what they will do.

Good luck.

Well the easiest explanation could (could) be really low blood sugar. Eat a huge breakfast. Eat lunch. Start writing private notes about when "it" happens. Being brutally hungry DOES make people temporarily insane. Start there. Move to more serious considerations. Eigth grade is a time when you are growing SO SO MUCH !! Your body is telling you something - be wise and listen !!!

Bipolar?

Maybe you might be bipolar. check with a physician.

Paradise Syndrome, while not officially recognized by psychologists as a mental condition, is a term used by some to refer to a condition in which a person suffers a feeling of dissatisfaction despite having achieved all their dreams. The term is often applied to individuals of such great wealth and success that they feel they no longer have anything left in life to accomplish. It is common with people who assign great value to their career and, although they have achieved much, do not feel satisfied.

It is unlikely that you are suffering from paradise syndrome at your young age as most of your life is still ahead of you but nevertheless it helps to demonstrate that often there is no apparent reason for a person's depression.

In most cases depression is due to boredom or a person feels that they have not achieved what they ought to have achieved. A lack of purpose and a lack of direction can also cause depression. Perhaps a more meaningful life requires charity work and other productive and constructive activities.
