Answers:

A bacterial or parasitic infection acquired by contaminated food, water, or surface contact can definitely linger for several weeks. These illnesses are very distressing and could be dangerous in some populations. (elderly, children, people compromised by other health conditions) They are also very contagious therefore, the patient and those in direct contact with the patient, should use caution to avoid spreading germs. Any gastrointestinal symptoms lasting more than 3-4 days should be checked medically by a culture and treated with antibiotics where indicated. A virus should "clear" in a few days and will not respond to antibiotics.

If your Dad is better now, you are probably fine; the germs thrive in people better than on surfaces. In general, disinfecting all high traffic locations such as bathrooms, kitchens, doorknobs, remotes, phones and good hand-washing can't hurt. Get rid of the kitchen sponge and keep food surfaces, dishes, towels, clothes, and bedding washed. Don't worry too much about it, just be smart.
