Does smoking and mental illness have a relation?!

Question: Does smoking and mental illness have a relation?
Ive been diagnosed with dpression ans anxiety in the past. I am on medication and feel normal. I went through some stressful times and picked up soking and chewing. Ive tried many times to stop but when you dont smoke you feel more depressed. I find that interesting and that is why its so difficult for people to stop. Why stop something that makes you feel so good yet is so harmful.

Answers:

Yes . We need to agree that there is closer relationship in mental illness and smoking. It is found in various researches that the percentage of people suffering from mental illness resorting to smoking is very high compared to other normal people.

The reasons are many like they feel reduction in their anxiety or depression, or they forget their worry, they get some company and pass on the time happily and so on. But smoking continuously also caused later on various more harmful physical diseases alsol

Instead of smoking they should resort to yoga, meditation. Particularly the Sahaja yoga of Mataji Nirmaladevi is very beneficial in fighting depression, anxiety or any sever mental and physical problem also. There are thousand of people who have relieved from it. can learn and practice sahajayoga.

Yes. In depression and anxiety, it can be used as a self-soothing mechanism.
Also, when an addicted smoker tries to quit, even a person with no previous history of mental illness can experience anxiety and jitteriness as a withdrawal symptom.
Smoking is also a good way to detach from surroundings... when you're smoking and you're occupying yourself with something, you have less time to sit around and acknowledge how crappy you may be feeling- also, as you become addicted, the nicotine will offer you a soothing feeling which will offer you comfort- both when you're feeling depressed and anxious.

Former smoker. Suffer(ed) depression and anxiety.

Hell yes. I was a mentally healthy normal young man at 25 before i took up smoking. My mental health is taking a turn for the worse.

I'm 27 now.
