Answers:
Lactose is a bunch of sugars hooked together. People who are lactose intolerant don't have the enzyme to break it up into individual bits of sugar. If that person were to drink milk, the molecules of lactose would get caught in the intestines. Lactose holds water so the person's insides would fill with water.
Lactose intolerance is caused by the lack of a digestive enzyme that breaks down lactose (sugar molecules found in milk and many dairy products). There are over the counter digestive aids that provide this enzyme as well as milk (such as dairy ease and lactaid) and other dairy products where the molecule has been broken down already for the consumer. For those who still have difficulties even with these products, there are alternatives (such as soy milk) that do not contain lactose. Be aware that lactose is added to many nondairy products as a binding and/or bulking agent, so read labels carefully.
