Help settle a "debate" I am having with my adult son. If it is 95 deg!

Question:

Help settle a "debate" I am having with my adult son. If it is 95 degrees outside what should the A/C be at?

I have always heard that inside should be no more than about 10 degrees cooler than outside. He thinks 20 degrees or more is just fine. Other than preferring one vs the other is there any medical evidence that too great a difference is bad?

Added Info: the issue is not money. He 37 and has enough. The issue is we work in the same office suite and I like less of a difference. Having said that, saving a few bucks....

Answers:

Why not simply regulate the internal temperature?

A common temperature is between 68-76 degrees internally.

I suspect you come from the Old School which tries to save money, not waste electricity, and tough it out. Your son, however, is New School and is ok with spending money.

Temperatures don't cause illness, stress, lack of sleep, poor nutrition, bacteria and viruses cause illness. The exceptions would be extreme temperatures, of course.

You don't need a "medical excuse" to tell your son you don't want to waste electricity artifically cooling the house. Just tell him that his allowance will rise as a function of saving electricity, and lower as a function of using it. If your electric bill does down, he gets more money. Then ask him what temperature he would prefer....?
