Answers:

SUBOXONE and SUBUTEX are prescription medicines used to treat adults addicted to opioid (narcotic painkillers) medicines and drugs, such as morphine and heroin. SUBOXONE and SUBUTEX take the place of these medicines and drugs and may help you stop using and abusing them. SUBOXONE and SUBUTEX are part of a complete addiction treatment program that also includes counseling or behavioral therapy.

It is very important for your son to not just take the subutex but use it as a part of a total rehab plan. If he wants to detox it can and will work for him and sometimes fairly quickly. If he doesnt want to and isnt interested in anything else except for the medication then he could be on it for a long time. ( some people have been known to beat their addiction in less than a month :) ) Usually if part of a plan they follow these 3 stages

Induction Phase

The induction phase is the medically monitored startup of buprenorphine therapy. Subutex for induction therapy is administered when an opioid-dependent individual has abstained from using opioids for 12–24 hours and is in the early stages of opioid withdrawal. If the patient is not in the early stages of withdrawal, i.e., if he or she has other opioids in the bloodstream, then the buprenorphine dose could precipitate acute withdrawal.

Stabilization Phase

The stabilization phase has begun when the patient no longer has cravings, and is experiencing few or no withdrawal symptoms. The Subutex dose may need to be adjusted during the stabilization phase.

Withdrawal Phase

The withdrawal phase is reached when the patient is doing well on a steady dose of buprenorphine (Subutex). Once the patient shows no sign of opiate withdrawal, the patient is the titrated (stepped-down) from the buprenorphine therapy, until they are drug-free. This phase replaces what was once named "detoxification".

There are some places that offer a inpatient detox using subutex and I believe that these have a better outcome and quicker results but are very structured
