I quit drinking and now I'm depressed?!

Question:

I quit drinking and now I'm depressed?

I quit drinking 8 months ago and now I'm really low on energy, depressed.. I was drinking everyday to relax me and put me in an up mood. I had a bad black out and I said to myself I dont want to die one day so I quit just like that.. It felt great for awhile, being in touch with reality and not numb to things but now im feeling sad..Not sure what to do to get better, any ideas?

Answers:

depression is usually the first sign of dependence. my suggestion to you is to seek out support groups for those in your shoes, like AA.
chances are as you stated, you drank because it would help you relax and put you in an "up" mood.
alcohol is a toxin. it is a depressant. many folks don't realize that because they base their "up time" while drinking as a good feel all. Eventually it takes more to feel that way.

Although it's been 8 months since you've quit, your body can sometimes take that long for the total effects from drinking long term to show face. Your body was used to alcohol.

I am very proud you quit. Now the next step. AA. Even an online support group would help.

Depression isn't simply a chemical imbalance-usually disease itself can cause depression. Self medicating in alcohol or other drugs or even if a person is prescribed-it's all a cover up. Once you stop, the issue is still there.

You should also follow up with a doctor and rule out diseases known to pass the blood brain barrier that cause depression.

Keep going! I'm proud of you! Not many would last 24 hours without a drink!
