I have a bottle that is about 3 years old....can I still use it?

The doctors say that most medications about about a one year shelf life. i dont know what happens to them after one year, maybe the chemical compounds break down and the medication is not as effective. is there not an expiration date on the prescription bottle? just go see your doc and get a new prescription. the use of antidepressants (especially beginning and ending) really needs to be under physician supervision anyways.
