Why does a Dr. prescribe 90 day prescriptions when he knows the insurance doesn&!
Question: Again and again my husbands Dr. prescribes 90 day prescriptions. Sometimes he has to stop taking the medication and it's paid for nothing. I also want to know if anyone takes Niaspan 500. I was told at the drugstore that an over the counter Niacin expanded version is the same thing as long as it's the same strength. And the cost is only a fraction of the prescription.

The Dr.'s office usually is unaware of your insurance co-pays.Also,if he has written a 90 day rx (w/ lots of insurance plans this can actually be cheaper than 3 refills of 30-days), you do not have to have it filled for that amount (i'm in NC,so state laws may be diff on this,if so ask Dr. to change the qty on the rx)....and yes,Niacin over the counter is the same thing as Niaspan and,yes,alot less money than Niaspan is!
My insurance pays for a 90 day supply. I request that. you need to talk this over with your dr.
