If you've quit smoking what is the best way to do it?!

Question: I'm a coffee and cigarette person. My mother died from this habit and I would really like to get away from them.

Answers: I'm a coffee and cigarette person. My mother died from this habit and I would really like to get away from them.

For soooo long, I was a coffee and ciggy guy - the "Breakfast of Champions", but then about 3 months ago I quit smoking, after doing it for close on 20 years.
I had tried once before but my heart wasn't in it, because I thoroughly enjoyed smoking, but I suddenly decided that enough was enough and I threw out all the ashtrays and lighters and simply went cold turkey.
It was hard for about 4 or 5 days, my word it was hard!!! But I did it, and now I don't miss it. Of course I am still a cigar guy (gotta be a good one) and have them occasionally, but I haven't touched a cigarette since and have had no real desire to either.

Just get yourself in the right frame of mind, and know that it will be a bumpy ride for a few days - oh and get a big supply of snacks and have plenty of things to keep you busy too. Also it would be a good idea to tell everyone immediately, not for words of congratulations, but to warn them to stay the hell out of your way if they do not wish to have their head ripped off and shoved up their own *** if they happen to blink at you in a funny way.......

Make friends with someone you really enjoy spending time with... but someone who HATES smoking. Or someone you don't want to know you smoke.

Spending time with my parents always gets me down to the bare minimum amount of cigarettes. Once you do that, go cold turkey. But don't wait until your pack is empty. Make sure you still have a few in there... because then you don't have an excuse to buy another pack, and then you won't be able to tell yourself that you need to finish it so you don't waste money.

This WORKS. Forget everything you know. Nicorette, Zyban, and other crap are "push button" fixes we've come accustomed to in our society. All these do is try to fix a problem with your money. Ther are no quick fixes.

Zyban is an antidepressant. Really now, do you want to start taking antidepressants?

You have ionly one thing to drill into your brain: do you **really* want to quit?

1. Stop. Just stop. The nicotine is out of your system in 72 hours, this is the physical part. Do NOT use patches or nicorette. This keep nicotine in your system and keep you addicted, reducing your chances of success.

2. If you need to smoke at first, go to the local news and smokes shop and get some non-nicotine cigarettes. They are horrible, but this will help with the mental addiction. In spite of what anyone tells you, this will **not** build a new addiction. They don't feed you nicotine, which brings you to #3.

3. This should take about a month. One day you'll wake up and just forget to smoke.

4. This is the hard part. After about three months you'll get the urge to smoke again. Don't fall for it! You need to get past 6 months, and the urge to smoke will always return - but it will become weaker and weaker.

Make it past the first three days and you're on your way. This WORKS. I did it.

The best way is the one that works for you. (I know, duh!!) But seriously, there are a vast number of methods available and everyone of them has worked fantastically for some and didn't do squat for others.

The most important criteria to a successful quit is that your desire to quit must be stronger than your desire to smoke. Anything else is just an aid, a crutch.

Personally, I quit using Wellbutrin XL (same as Zyban) for the first month. That was in May, 2005 and I've been tobacco-free since.

Study the various quit methods and pick the one that feels right for you. Give it a shot. If it works, congratulations. If it doesn't, congratulations, pick another and try again. What is important is that you never quit quitting.

Join an on-line support group. I suggest either www.woofmang.com or www.dailystrength.com, but you use whatever one(s) you are most comfortable with.
Perhaps speak with your doctor about the various quitting methods.
Do not trust anyone who says "This is the best way and all the others don't work." They are either selling something or don't have much experience in quitting smoking.
