it depends on how long ago you pulled the muscle. it is generally acknowledged that in the first 48 hours post muscle strain the intermittent application of ice to the area ( wrapped in a plastic bag and towel) for 15-20 minutes helps to reduce swelling and reduce bleeding.

Applying heat and massaging the area in the first 2-3 days is likely to increase the swelling and bleeding into the muscle! so don't do it! (I mean, would you put heat on, and massage a cut finger! It would never stop bleeding aye?!)

Elevating the leg and resting it are also of benefit.

After this time varying amounts of stretching and walking may help.

Massage therapy and the application of heat may be appropriate after the first few days but this really needs to be assessed by a health professional. Ulitmately continuing stretching and the graded strengthiening of the muscle will assist you to restore full strength. Once agian the type of stretches and the type and level of strengthening should be prescribed by a physio or sports med physician.

rest and massage

rub it..stay off of it..apply heat

Heat the area for 30 minutes then do a slow stretch type movements and hold for a count of 30 then relax for count of 30 and repeat 2 more times and finish with heat for 15 - 30 minutes then rest.
Do this 2 or more times in a day.

Regardless of health insurance you should not self diagnose, Look in your local area to see if there is a low cost health clinic. However if you insist on self diagnosis then use the right tools...check out webmd and see if they can assist you
