Can a person have more than 1 hip replacement?!

Question: I have sickle cell anemia and my shoulder and hip joints have dead bone. I can either have drilling in the bone, to re-generate new bone, or get it replaced. But I was told you can only have one hip replacement. Once that goes out thats it. Is this true?

A primary hip replacement may fail for some reason and need to be revised. The ideal situation would be that the fake hip outlives the patient; however the younger a person is when they have the primary hip replacement, the more likely it is that they may need revision surgery some time in their life. So I guess the correct answer here is that it isn't necessarily true that you can have only one hip replacement. There are several reasons that one might have revision surgery. One reason for needing revision surgery is loosening of the hip prosthesis:

Dead bone is called "osteonecrosis" and this is one of the indications for hip replacement. Here's a link to more info:

Osteoarthritis is one of the commonest indications for hip replacement. I had osteoarthritis in both hips and have had both of them replaced.

I haven't heard that. When hip replacements were first done they were only good for 10 years - now its 30. I would ask an orthopod.

We can have both hips and both knees replaced thru
standardized surgeries. Your physician has to determine
whether your underlying health condition allow you a
riskfree general anasthesia and major surgery.
