Is sleeping with white noise still "good" sleep?!

Question: Hello. I live in a college dorm and as can be expected it is quite loud even on weekdays. I have started to use a fan turned on high to drown out the noise- it works like a charm!

I was wondering though, does this loud background noise still allow me to get a good night's sleep? Do I still get a full REM cycle?

As far as I know I have been sleeping the whole night through and have even been dreaming.

Thank you!

Yes - for you to have been dreaming you must have achieved the REM stage. Do you wake up naturally, or do you wake up abruptly due to the noise of the fan? If you wake up naturally, then that would suggest too that you are achieving all stages of sleep that are required. It's much better to have a constant noise during your sleep (like your fan) than to have the inconsistent noise of your dorm mates. I was in a dorm last year, so totally understand what you're going through!

If you are dreaming you have REM. It's fine.

If your wakin up refreshed then yes you are, if your waking up tired then duh your not lol

Oh yeah, white noise is the best kind of sleep music for me.
If you awaken feeling rested and are not drowsy during the day, you are probably getting your good sleep, including REM.
