IF THE PATIENT IS IN A COMA THE PATIENT IS NOT STABLE ENOUGH TO GO THRU THE STRESS OF SURGERY THEY WILL OPERATE ONLY WHEN THEY KNOW HE OR SHE WILL NOT CODE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE OPERATION, CODE MEANING THE HEART STOP BEATING, THE PUNCTURED LUNG CAN BE FIXED BY INSERTING A CHEST TUBE AND THE LIVER UNLESS IT SEVERED A VESSEL WILL HAVE TO HEAL ITS SELF. THE BROKEN NECK WILL BE OPERATED ON TO STABLIZE THE BONES BUT THAT WILL TAKE TIME TO HEAL ALSO.

I would imagine it has something to do with monitoring the patients vital signs and the extremely low blood pressure a coma patient would have.
