Black N Blue Under toenails?!

Question: I read up on this online it says runners get it. The toe turns black under the nail but I am just not sure if I should be doing anything about it. So I was looking for opinions? I wore these shoes to work, they were new and felt really tight around the toes... like my feet were going to bust out of the front and it hurt. l don't get that! They were my size so maybe it was the way they were made? They were pumas too. Anyway, after the job ended like a few weeks later when I took off my nail polish I noticed under my toe it was very black and blue. Only on the one side on the toe. I heard you can drain it with a pin (NOT GOING TO DO THAT)! I just want to know if it is harmful to not do anything about it? It said you can let the toe nails grow and it gets rid of it as it grows out. It doesn't hurt anymore it use to but now only when I press hard in the area it is a little sore but other than that I don't notice it. So should I do anything about it or just keep on letting it grow out?

That happened to me once when I was younger. I was practicing for softball, and I went to swing at a pitch and the ball hit my thumb instead of the bat. My thumbnail got bruised underneath. I didn't do anything, the nail eventually fell off and a new nail grew in.
