I can definately relate. I am definately a bad insomniac so I take prescription medicine for it. What has been suggested to me in the past is to try this-
1. Do no do anything else (well not EVERTHING ;) ) in your bed other than sleeping (tv, internet etc)
2. Do not watch tv / go on internet 30 minutes before bedtime- this stimulates your brain
3. Try reading, drawing, any quiet activity
4. Make sure your room isn't too hot/cold
5. Take a bubble bath before bed
6. I know you tried the journal thing but maybe try it this way- make a list of what is bothering you, then next to each thing, write what you could do to help or make it less stressful. Or make a list of goals for the week/day
7. If you do not fall asleep after 20 minutes of laying there, get out of bed and do something quiet (reading, knitting, make a collage w/ magazines etc). Go back into bed once you feel like you might fall asleep
8. Become more active during the day, exercise at least 20 minutes
9. Yoga/meditate
10. Count sheep?

i count. its calms me down and puts me to sleep. or try praying. that might be a better relase than the whole journal thing.

What helps me is to lay down in bed and relax. I slow my breathing to long deep breaths and fantasize about a happy memory of mine. Relive that memory or tweak it to make it perfect in your mind then after awhile you would just fall asleep before you even finish the memory. I hope this works for you. Good Luck :)

UNISOM...take a few of those like an hour before you want to go to bed for a few nights. After that your body will be adjusted to going to bed earlier and you won
