Lebatalol while breastfeeding?!

Question: Just wondering if any of you are on any perscription meds while nursing. My son is almost 17 months old and we have been breastfeeding since day 1. I have been taking Lebatalol for high blood pressure the entire time and have been since I was pregnant. I was told by my Dr., his Dr., and the pharmisist that it was acceptable to take while pregnant and breastfeeding....but I'm just wondering what you all think or know.

Good question. Lebatalol is in the drug family of beta blockers. It does cross the placenta into babies blood supply during pregnancy and it does get into breast milk. So there is potential for harm to the baby. If you look at various sources looking at this issue some say labatalol is harmful to the baby but offer no explanation of how or what effect. Some sources say even though it crosses placenta barrier and into breast milk it is not likely to cause any harm to the baby. I know that there are doctors prescribing it to pregnant and lactating mothers so maybe it's some comfort to know your doctor is not the only one doing it. You'll have to decide for yourself if you are comfortable with taking it. Please don't stop taking it without consulting your doctor as your increase in blood pressure could even cause a stroke. If it was me I would express my concern to the doctor and ask his opinion on whether there is any safer med you could take. Then decide. Do treat your blood pressure even if you don't like the answers. You want your baby to grow up with his mom.

thanx hopeymag good answer i just wanna add that the only approved drug for hypertension during preg and lactation is alpha methyl dopa other solution which is benefit vs risk is to take the drug and the baby take any suitable milk
