I would have to say that the lengthy answer that you got below is pretty good!. I'm a Pedorthist and I treat people who have problems like yours!. I agree with the comment about arch supports and wearing the proper shoe!. I'm a runner (former sprinter University of South Carolina) and I've had your problem!. Follow the advice of the person below!. I would, however, recommend the Spira shoe and firm arch supports!. The Spira shoe has a shock absorbing spring system built into the sole!. I still run about 4-5 miles 4 days a week!. I use to use New Balance, changing them every 3-4 months because the rubber decompressed!. I wore my first pair of Spiras for 2 years only changing them because I wore a hole in the sole and the springs started coming through!. In the two years I could never detect any change in the shoes ability to absorb shock!. This shock absorbtion is important for shin splints!. The other thing is arch support!. The stuff that comes in your new running or any shoe are inserts, just rubber!. They flatten over time and can't give joint alignment like a good arch support!. A firm arch support (not Dr!. Sholls stuff which is rubber or gels) will more properly align your joints and help them work more efficiently and effectively!. This too will help with shin splints!.

*If you have shin splints, you may notice:

Tenderness, soreness or pain along the inner part of your lower leg
Mild swelling
At first, the pain may stop when you stop running or exercising!. Eventually, however, the pain may be continuous!.

*Shin splints are caused by an overload on the shinbone and the connective tissues that attach your muscles to the bone!. The overload is often caused by specific athletic activities, such as:

Running downhill
Running on a slanted or tilted surface
Running in worn-out footwear
Engaging in sports with frequent starts and stops, such as basketball and tennis
Shin splints can also be caused by training too hard, too fast or for too long!.

*Shin splints are usually diagnosed based on your medical history and a physical exam!. In some cases, an X-ray or other imaging studies can help the doctor rule out other conditions, such as a stress fracture
