Sounds just like something I went through!.

A year or two ago, I lost one of my big toenails in an accident where a pallet jack weighing two tons rolled over the front of my toe!. Luckily, it stopped before it reached the bone, but the toenail was uprooted!. For about a day, I didn't know it was completely detached and left it to cover the nail loosely, but as I washed the wound with alcohol the next day, I noticed it was loosely attached, so I removed it!. I didn't know better!.

If the toenail is still attached, I would recommend leaving it!. Perhaps trim the end, because there's going to be a lot of bacteria under the tip, but the part that was attached should be relatively sterile!. Sterilizing with alcohol or a similar solution would be good (there are even hurt-free sterilizers at the supermarket)!. It is going to take perhaps 6 months for it to grow back fully, and if there's no covering in place, for the first couple or several days while a scab forms (it takes a while), it's going to painful every time even a breeze comes in contact!. If the toe is stubbed on the ground or a doorway, of course, it's going to hurt much more!. The original nail is the best splint, perfectly formed!.

Whether the nail is still there or not, a trip to the doctor is highly recommended!. They can clean and dress the wound, make sure everything's okay, tell her to eat and rest well, and prescribe antibiotics (and perhaps painkillers)!. However, I understand that sometimes, a trip to the doctor is not always possible or desired!. I didn't go myself until much later after my injury, only because I waited for school to resume (free health office)!. But then again, I had antibiotics at home, and was able to take good care of my toe!.

If she decides not to go to the doctor, have her take oral antibiotics if you've got some (not topical ointments such as Neosporin)!. It's naturally a dirty area, and quite easy to become infected (which will make things Much worse)!. Clean and sterilize the wound very thoroughly, especially the first time (I can't stress this enough!)!. Soaking in water is woefully inadequate!. The underside of the tip of the toenail harbors so much bacteria!. Tylenol will help with the pain, but NSAIDs such as Advil, Alleve, Aspirin, and Mortrin will also help with inflammation, and these would be better choices for your situation!.

I hope your mother doesn't roll around much when she sleeps!. Until a scab forms, I'd advise sleeping with pillows under the calf so that the foot is suspended in the air!. That way even if she rolls a little bit, the foot doesn't come into contact with anything!. For the first few days, keeping the foot suspended on a desk or such will help the scab form!. Walking around may induce more bleeding!. Especially when at hope, try to keep the wound open!. Exposure to the air will help it dry out faster (I had drainage for a few days)!. Any bandage or gauze on top of the wound will probably stick--it'll be painful to remove, and bleed again!.

Vinapatt has good advice as well!. If the toe swells even more in subsequent days, or there are red streaks going to the heart (up the toe), increasing redness in the area, more tenderness and heat from the wound, pus (yellow drainage), or if she develops a fever, these are signs of infection, and definitely warrant a trip to the doctor!.

If the toenail later grows back improperly, it may be necessary to have it surgically removed (a very simple process), so that it can grow back again!. I worried much about this one myself, but it turned out perfectly fine!. I hope you and others can learn from my experiences!. Feel free to message me if you have additional questions!. Otherwise, best wishes for a speedy, complication-free recovery!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

The first thing she needs to do is soak her toe!. While she is soaking her toe, someones needs to get her a pain reliever!. She should check her toe in the morning and evening and if it is getting red or hot or notices a red line going up her foot, get to the Dr!. or hospital right away!. She more than likely will loose her toenail and may need to see the Dr!. if it does not grow back in the right way!. A lot of times when people loose a nail, if the nail did not get separated from the cuticle, it will not grow in correctly and she will have problems with it for the rest of her life!.

First things first!. Soak it, pain medicine and keep an eye on it!. There is nothing that the Dr!. can do for a broken toe, but if the pain is too bad, she needs to go in and have it checked out and get some pain medicine!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

a pain medicine like tylenol or motrin is a good choiceWww@Answer-Health@Com
