Answers:
Anytime you cut yourself or bruise yourself, your blood forms a clot to stop the bleeding!. So naturally, a surgery patient's body is recovering from the wounds of the surgery, which causes clotting!. The patient also typically has to remain immobile for a period of time after the surgery, which causes poor blood circulation!. Poor circulation, in combination with the clotting from the surgery, makes a dangerous combination!. Knee and hip replacement patients are the most at risk for developing deep vein thrombosis (blood clots of the deep veins)!. If the clot breaks off and travels to the lungs, that's called a pulmonary embolism, which is a medical emergency and can be deadly!.

While patients undergoing major surgery may be at highest risk, ANY restricted mobility for a long period of time is a risk factor (such as long car or plane rides, or sitting at an office desk for very long periods without moving)!.

Pulmonary embolism is one of the most common preventable causes of hospital death!. Surgery patients need to be made aware of the risk of developing blood clots, and need to be given measures to prevent them!. (Blood thinners, compression stockings, etc!.)Www@Answer-Health@Com

It's not the operation that caused the blood clots!.
Blood clots are caused by poor circulation!. I'm surprised that the Dr!. didn't put your friend on a blood thinner after surgery!.
Also, you can wear support stockings to help prevent blood clots!. (not pantyhose) They are called TEDS and JOBST stockingsWww@Answer-Health@Com

That happend to me after i got knee surgery and like four hours after i first started walking my leg got red and puffy!. When i got it treated i asked them why it happend and they said it because i hadnt been using my leg an the blood wasnt moving around and something about the circulation!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Operations don't cause clots!. Poor circulation and immobility cause blood clots!. Th best prevention is to get moving as soon as possible!. If one will be immobile for a while most hospitals and docs have measures to prevent clots!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
