Is tying your shoe tight good for a twisted ankle/why is it bad to to take your !

Question:

Is tying your shoe tight good for a twisted ankle/why is it bad to to take your shoe off instead?

I was recently at a basketball camp and twisted my ankle when I fell backwards. At first I took my shoe off but one of the coach guys there told me to put it back on and that the best thing to do is tie it as tight as you can. I didn't exactly catch why he told me not to take my shoe off, but the pain was tolerable and I started playing a bit after sitting out a while.
Now that camp is over and I'm at home and have treated my ankle, the pain's gotten better and I can walk fine - although I can't rotate or bend my foot too much and going up stairs is a bit painful - but there is still some swelling in the area. Should I still tie my shoes really tight and does that actually help, especially since it is already swollen?

Answers:

I agree with the person above. Too tight is bad. DO NOT get all your advice from coaches or untrained persons. They are most likely wrong. Athletic trainers are who you go to for the right information. But that's just me because I am one. =)

For getting your ankle better do what the person above said but add these things:
Calf stretches
drawing the ABC's with your toe(pretending your big toe is a pencil and your are writing the letter in the air)
wrap a towel around the bottom of your foot while sitting on the floor with your legs out in front of you. Pump your ankle while holding onto the towel
These will all help increase your range of motion. The pain going up the steps is probably from your calf so the stretches and pumps will start making that feel better. DONT PUST IT TOO HARD!!!
hope all this helps!
