When someone gets shot?!

Question: When someone gets shot?
Why is it important for them to keep their eyes open? Like in the movies, when John Tyree gets shot, his friend told him to have his eyes open when hes going unconscious. Is dying like sleeping?

When you receive any large trauma such as gunshot wound the greatest risk is not the damaged caused by the bullet but the patient going into shock due to loss of bodily fluids (this time blood)
The body will start to shut down and if you allow this to happen death is very likely and by trying to keep the casualty talking and awake is one of the best ways (as well as trying to stop the bleed and elevating the wounded area and keeping them warm)

Well in my opinion it could be a way to make sure they are still with you, also they could go into shock and if they close there eye's i am pretty sure they could go into coma.
