Answers:

Oxycontin comes in 10, 20, 40, and 80 mgs right now. They are coming out with several new strengths soon. If you feel that the medication isn't working well, talk to your doctor. He/she may bump you up to the 40 mgs dose, or they may add something for breakthrough pain. I myself started out on the 20 mgs. It didn't help a whoile lot, so the doc changed me to the 40 mgs. I was still having breakthrough pain, so they added Oxy IR. That worked beautifully up until 2 months ago (I've been in pain management a year this month) when they changed my breakthrough meds to OxyFast Solution. There are options. Talk to your doctor, he's there to make sure you're as pain-free as possible with as few side-effects as possible.

Also, cryllie is correct, tolerance is not a symptom of addiction. People are referred to pain management specialists by their doctors because they are going to need pain relief for the forseeable future. It is not done lightly. All the hoops you have to jumo through in pain management are evidence of that. Do not worry about addiction. As long as you are taking the medication as prescribed, you are not in danger of becoming addicted. You will become dependant on the medication, but that is much different than being an addict.
