Back pain, help!?!

Question:

Back pain, help!?

Hubby hurt his lower right side of his back. It seems to be swelling...any tips for reliefe...he's stubborn!

Answers:

Ice. DO NOT HEAT! If it is a new injury, heat on an injury within the first 72 hours can make it worse!

Ice for 20-30 minutes, every 2-3 hours. If it is a spasm, then there is blood rushing to the muscle causing it to seize. Ice will make the blood want to leave the muscle site and hopefully relieve the spasm and the pain.

Heat will just bring more blood to the site and cause the spasm to stay and get worse!

After he ices, have him sit on the ground with his legs in a V. Stand behind him and gently push him as he extends his arms foreward. Only push him until he is feels uncomfortable but not in pain. Then have him reach his opposite hand to his opposite foot (right hand, left foot). Stretch the same way. This will isolate the lower back area. It doesn't hurt to do both sides even if there is no pain.

Ibuprofen like Advil or Aleve will help with any swelling and pain.

Good luck!
