How do you know what degree burn it is?!

Question: How do you know what degree burn it is?
i got burned a week ago, and i'm wondering, how can i tell what degree it is? 1st, 2nd, or 3rd. how can you tell without going to the hospital or a doc? it's healing now but the skin is cracking and it looks kind of deep. and the skin is peeling, it's pretty thick and when i peel, it's pink. also the area is kind of numb now. thanks :)

The best way I can tell you is this. Sun burn is usually a first degree burn--Red painful tender to the touch is first degree. There are plenty of different things you can buy for it. I would recommend almost anything with Aloe Vera and little if any alcohol. That will dry your skin. If it blisters it is a second degree burn and what ever you do DO NOT pop the blisters, let it heal by itself. You are risking an infection if you do. Aloe Vera ointment is the best stuff I have found for second degree burns, which is what it sounds like you have. You do not need to see a Dr. for second degree burn unless you get an infection. If the area is charred and blackened that is third degree burn and must be seen by a Dr. at once. Use caution when you peel the healing burn that you only remove the dead skin. Personally I say let your body do its' own thing and leave it well enough alone.
