Question:
I am having an MRI tomorrow and wondered if anyone had any advive, tips, or worries to tell me?
Answers:
Completely harmless, non-invasive and 100% pain-free.
Nothing at all, like I had imagined it.... thankfully!
Like you, it was also my first MRI, and I was scared beyond belief. My only reference to "Magnetic Radiation Imagery" was drawn from the Medical Drama series ER.
I didn't know this at the time, but apparently it isn't called a Drama series for nothing!
When the Doctor told me I would be going for an MRI, to help find the source of my head-aches, I was paralysed with fear, and within seconds myself in the midst of a full-blown, hour long Panic Attack.
When I'd calmed down a little, he laughed and jokingly said "You have been watching too much ER Missy!'', and re-assured me there is absolutely nothing to fear. And it turned out his remark was no joke to me at all, because he was right!
I can only think of 2 slightly unsettling things that accompanied the entire experience.
1.- A slight feeling of discomfort when I first viewed the multitude of foreign looking objects that filled the sterile surroundings. With scary looking machinery, and medical equipment left, right and centre, I was already compelled to make a run for it!
and -
2. - The requirement to remain completly still. It actually sounded inviting, a chance to stretch out, relax and take advantage of sneaking in a little peace and quiet - ((three young Kids under five, yep .....enough said!!!)) .
However, just after they had begun, my plans to finally relax were cut short. A little Mosquito bite on my ankle had started becoming unbearably itchy, and I desperayely wanted to move my arms to give it a good scratch.
And wouldn't you know it, I didn't even get to experience the satisfaction of scratching it, as the itch had all but vanished - yep, you guessed it, right at the very end of the test....Rrrrrrrrrrrr........
