Adam, cramps happen in events like this from fatigue. The cramp is in response to overuse. Most likely it was in one of your calves. To stop this do this. Assume a long sitting position. Keep the knees straight and have the muscles of the feet pull them back towards your shins. The only movement that is occurring is at the ankles. You will know that the movement is being done correctly as there will be a pulling in the calves. Hold that pull as hard and far back to the shin as possible for 5 to 10 seconds. Rest for a few seconds and then repeat this cycle until you have done between 5 to 10 reps. Do this a few times a day and right before swimming and just after.
