What steroid injection is given to patients with osteo athritis?!
Question:
What steroid injection is given to patients with osteo athritis?
a patient with osteo athritis of the hip was injected on the site of the pain.
Answers:
Commonly, doctors injecting an arthritic joint would use Depo-Medrone with Lidocaine.
This is a combination of two drugs in one injection. The Depo-medrone is a steroid also known as methylprednisilone. This reduces inflammation in the joint to relieve pain and increase mobility. The steroid takes a few days to start working and will last for upto 6 months.
Because the steroid takes a while to start working, lidocaine is given as the second drug. This is a local anaesthetic similar to what a dentist would use. This provides some immediate relief until the steroid has time to start working.
Some doctors prefer to use a different steroid (such as dexamethasone) and some will not use lidocaine - especially in small joints.
