Numbness in right arm?!

Question:

Numbness in right arm?

I suddenly developed a numbness down the back of my right arm, right shoulder and up into my neck, under my right jaw and right ear (no pins and needles, no pain - just a loss of sensation). I went to A&E - blood tests (diabetes, B12 +more), CAT scan, xray's and MRI (head and neck)checked out OK although the neuroligist said she saw some "slight wear" on my vertibrae on the right side (no trapped nerve in neck). Numbness still there after 7 days, no improvement - no dis-improvement.

All the Neuro chair tests checked out ok (peripheral vision, strength in both arms, movements etc etc)

44 yo male, uses computer a lot, lot of international travel, mid to heavy drinker, moderately active (2 to 3 hrs exercise per week) 40lbs over weight.

What could be left?

Answers:

I too agree that you should undergo some Remedial massage therapy or physiotherapy. I'm a Remedial massage therapist and have quite a similar problem with numbness in my right shoulder. What is happening with me, and something I also see in a lot of my clients is, there is a lot of tension in the pectoral region associated with your computer work etc. The tension builds and then further creates tension in the deeper muscles, particularly being "subclavius". One of its purposes is to help position and protect the subclavian artery which transports blood to the right arm. When subclavius gets tight, it slows down the blood flow, creating a somewhat pooling effect in the arm, and the numb sensations. The benefits of seeing a Remedial massage therapist, or a physio in comparison to a normal massage therapist being they can conduct special tests which will determine if this is actually the problem before they start poking around in your neck. If your therapist DOES NOT run through any special tests, I'd suggest finding someone more qualified.
