There can be many reasons...the first question to ask is "In what context do they fall asleep?" Are you just sitting there? Does it happen when you lie on them during your sleep?
Probably one of the most common ways it can occur during the waking hours is related to posture. Poor posture can cause compression of the brachial plexus which is a bundle of nerves that can become compressed between the neck and shoulder. Using good posture usually helps and is often all that is necessary...but those who have an extra rib (a "cervical rib") or other structural anaomalies or obstructive processes can be suffering from thorasic outlet syndrome which could require further diagnostic testing or follow up care.
This could also be the sign of a very significant neck problem...especially if it is occuring in both arms.
In either case, if correction your posture does not help, you need to follow up with a physician.
