Question:
Giant Papillary Conjunctivitis. Dying. Please help!?
In short, I guess, the only thing I want to know is if GPC can be cured. Im on allergan, patanol & tears naturale. The doctor said that I could wear lenses during my 3 month duration but I've been avoiding it anyway, just incase. I just .. after reading many articles I'm just scared, I sort of depend on my contact lenses. My right eye has a number of -10.5 & left -9.5.
Please help.
Answers:
i practice in an area of the country that has a lot of allergens, so we FREQUENTLY see this. i'm up to about 1-2 cases PER DAY of newly diagnosed GPC. its hot and very humid here, so we get a lot of mold and pollen.
patanol is a good idea, but if the case is bad enough i personally mostly use steroids like alrex. in moderate-to-severe cases i go with:
1) switching the patient to daily disposables. dailies have very thin edges (less interaction with eyelid) and never have any buildup
2) use topical steroids like alrex
3) use topical antihistamines like patanol (or OTC alaway and zaditor)
4) cold compresses 2-3 times per day
5) NO RUBBING. i tell patients to avoid rubbing their eyes if at all possible during the acute phase
6) sometimes i suggest oral antihistamines as well...claritin, etc
some Rx's are not available in dailies. for those patients i go with preservative-free hydrogen peroxide based contact lens solutions like CLEAR CARE instead of chemical no-rub solutions like renu, opti-free, etc
