I assume you're from the UK since you use the term "squint." The term strabismus is used in the US. That refers to deviations of the position of the eye (i.e. the two eyes aren't lined up together straight).
There are some people whose eyes are definitely not aligned all the time. The term we use for that is a frank strabismus. There are some people's eyes who seem to be lined up most of the time but when they get distracted (daydreaming, staring at distance) or when their fusion is interrupted (one of the eyes are covered or blocked), does this deviation become apparent. This is usally when the term latent strabismus is used.
