Suddenly dark ring under my eye?!

Question: Help! This is really strange. I always had some dark rings under my eyes, but it was really normal and one would hardly notice. But this morning I woke up and when I saw my face in the mirror I was quite shoked: I had a dark ring under my left eye, it almost looked like someone punched me but nobody did so... wth is wrong with me???

I have heard that this can happen as the result of a food allergy. When I eat foods I am allergic to, my throat swells shut, but my eyes stay normal. I guess I would rather trade :-)

Several web sites indicate that nasal decongestants can improve the symptoms, because nasal congestion causes changes to the flow of blood to the area, which causes the circles.

From U of Michigan hospitals:
"What causes dark circles under the eyes?
The most common cause of dark bluish circles under the eyes is congestion of the nose. The veins from the eyes drain into the veins of the nose. If the nose is blocked up, the veins around the eyes become larger and darker. To understand what's going on, we need to look at the nose.

These dark circles are sometimes called allergic shiners because nasal congestion is usually caused by nasal allergy or hay fever. Dark circles are also caused by chronic sinus infections, recurrent colds, or blockage of the nose by large adenoids. (If the dark circles are caused by large adenoids, your child probably breathes mostly through his mouth instead of his nose.) Dark circles under the eyes are especially noticeable in children with fair complexions.

Overall, dark circles under the eyes are not a sign of poor health or troubled sleep.

What is the treatment?
Treatment depends on the cause of the congestion.

See related topics for information about specific causes.

When should I call my child's health care provider?
Call during office hours if:

You don't know what is causing the dark circles under your child's eyes.
You have other questions or concerns. "

Dark circles could be from a number of things:
Persistent eye rubbing
Sleep difficulty - (stress, depression, sleep disorders, etc.).
Allergies
Hay fever
Allergic shiners
Dust allergy
Mold allergy
Eczema - eczema in the skin under the eyes.
Pallor - the paleness of the skin may accentuate the dark rings.
Inherited eye blood vessel condition - dark circles under the eyes run in families.
Aging
Dehydration

My guess is that it is from some allergy. If it persists, see your doctor.
