What causes the dots?!

Question: When you stare at the ceiling or the wall for long enough or in the right way you can see little dots and swirls and stuff. What causes this?

it's called sensory overload, eyes are meant to take in colours and patterns, not just one solid image. so the receptors get fatigued and the result is that you perceive movement and colour where there isn't really any.

Weed

Those are floaters, (dead cells floating around your eye).
Do they look something like this?...(below)

yea weed cuases it

its just the amount of time you stare. in my opinion.

The light makes your eyes see other things try doing this in a dark room bet u it wont happen unless u really press your eyes hard

Dead cells that came loos from inside your eyelid floating around your eye. They are called floaters.

Floaters.

Those are just little dead cells moving about around your eyes that you can't see when you are looking at things and blinking your eyes but when you stare at something for a while it comes up...no worries..

They are called "floaters" they are blood vessels. Like varicose veins in the eye. I've had them all my life. They are not from an outside source (something in your eye, eyestrain). They are always in the same place, but when it's overcast I see them more. Or when I have a bad headache.

your eyes are unclear [[from not blinking]] so you get dirt and other things on your eye.

OOOOH
i know whatchya mean.
That stuff is craaazy.
I think its just the adjustment of your eyes.
Haha
I like the first girls awnser.

Let's hope it's not little insects crawling around your walls and ceilings. Time for a major clean up ?

Your brain automatically attempts to justify images through patterns, so it interprets those little imperfections in the ceiling and walls into optical patterns, causing you to believe that you are seeing an actually pattern despite the unconscience knowledge that the imperfections are totally random.
