"scratch resistant" lenses are meant to stand up to every day wear and tear, like cleaning. Hard coatings do NOT render a lens "scratch proof". There is no such thing. The closest you can get to being scratch proof is glass, and even those can scratch. Glass is about 4 times heavier than plastic and the least safest of all lenses and seldom recommended, but their durability would be one of the only advantages to glass lenses.

How is she cleaning them? Is she using paper towels and tissues? They will scratch. 100% cotton OR microfiber should only be used to plastic and polycarbonate lenses. Does she leay them "lenses down" on the table? They will scratch. Is she putting them in her case the right way? Sometimes, depending on how the case is designed, the glasses may be meant to go in a certain way to keep them from scratching.

Scratch resistant lenses do NOT hold up to dropping them on the sidewalk, dog teeth, stepping on them, car keys...no lenses would stand up to most of that. I've seen many many kids come in to our office with lenses that have clearly been abused, and surprisingly enough, NONE of the children ever seem to know how it happened...its always a big mystery. I get stories like, "They were totally fine and then I took them off, put them in the case on the dresser, and when I put them on the next morning, they were TOTALLY scratched up..."

Right.

Anyway, there is a very durable scratch guard by Essilor called "TD2". Its a tough, durable, 2-sided protective lens and it holds up the best to scratching IMO. It costs a little more ($45 where I work) but it comes with a guarantee and really does make a huge difference. Ask about it next time you get her lenses replaced.

Because they are scratch resistant not scratch proof. There's no way of making them scratch proof.

sratch resistant just means that they're harder to scratch than normals glasses are.. they can still be scratched.. ( she doesn't know or she doesn't want to tell you)

They resist scratches but that doesn't;t mean they can't be scratched.

I'll repeat just what luna said.... scratch resistant is not scratch proof. :-) No lens is scratch proof... and if someone tells you they are... go somewhere else.
