Do you work at an optometry office?!

Question: If so, what do you do on the job?

And is it not one of the stressful jobs to have?

Answers: If so, what do you do on the job?

I used to, and I may go back to it part-time.

Optometrist.

As with many jobs and preofessions, the stresses come from working with the public and, in the UK, with the National Health Service bureaucracy
(Other countries may have different legislation or financial frustrations)
There are many worse jobs.

After 27 years I decided I needed a sabbatical before I picked a patient up by the throat while snarling "Answer the question!"...

"How long have you had this?"
"It's really bad now."

"Have you considered bifocals?"
"I don't want to wear glasses all the time." etc., etc.,

BEST answer from a patient...
"Is there any eye disease in your family?"
<pause>
"The dog's got cataract."

At reception, the amazing inability of many people to realise that their eyes don't automatically take priority over everyone else's.

I have this idea that we should be allowed by law to shoot three patients a year, to encourage the others. We probably wouldn't have to, just hang a sign up in reception: "We haven't used our quota yet."

Yes, I work at an optometry office. I own and manage the office. There are several different positions one can fill in an optometric office. These different positions involve different requirements as far as knowledge and patient care goes. As in all jobs there is stress in the workplace but I thoroughly enjoy my job and I try to make it an enjoyable environment for my employees as well. I employ 16 in my office with the following jobs.

1) Front desk receptionist
2) Office and insurance manager
3) Patient router (controls flow of patients within the office)
4) Contact lens assistant
5) Data collection and pre exam screener.
6) Optician
7) Frame stylist
8) Laboratory technician.

More than one individual may be employed in these various positions. As far as job stress, the best way to know about job stress is to ask those working currently at the office about how they feel.
