I'm not sure Medicare will cover contacts; I have heard it will only cover glasses in most cases. You may want to call them and find out before setting up an eye exam and contact fitting.

I had my eye exam and contact fitting at a Wal-Mart Vision Center. I don't have any vision insurance, and my total was only $91. That included my exam/fitting, one trial pair of contacts to wear for 2 weeks, a starter kit with solution and contact case, and a copy of my prescription so that I can order my contacts from anywhere online or at any eye doctor's office. I always order mine online; they are a lot cheaper that way. You don't HAVE to order your contacts from the place that does your eye exam...the eye doctors in the US are now required by law to give you a copy of your prescription.

Normally in the US, a contacts or glasses prescription is valid for one year from the date it was written. You don't have to go back in every week for a checkup or anything like that. As long as you don't have any problems occur with your eyes, you can wait another year before going back to renew your contacts prescription. You can order as many boxes of contacts as often as you like while your prescription is still valid. I prefer to order mine in bulk; I always get either a 6 month supply or a one year supply when I order my contacts. But you can order just one box at a time as well; it's up to you.

The prices on contacts vary widely. The cheapest will be the daily disposables, then weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, and yearly wear (most expensive). I wear the bi-weekly contacts, so I change to a new pair every 2 weeks. Your contacts could be as cheap as $10 per box with dailies, or on up into the $100s, depending on what brand and wear length you get. Contacts are also more expensive if you have astigmatism. If price is a concern, talk to your eye doctor, and tell him roughly what price range you'd like to stay within per box...he/she may be able to find some contacts suitable for you within your price range.

Just be sure that you ONLY wear your contacts for as long as recommended before disposing of them. If you get weeklies, then wear them for 7 days, toss them, and change to a new pair. Wearing contacts for longer than recommended can cause serious eye problems.

Contacts prices varies depending on which type you have. My insurances gives me x amount to spend a year and with that I got 6 boxes and my husband got 10.

I would suggest when you go to get fitted for your contacts to not get the disposable kind. These are the kind you have to refill every 2 weeks and they definitely get expensive. Mine come with 6 contacts and each set lasts for 1-2 months. I can even stretch one box to last more than 6 months. And they run $20 each eye per box at Pearle Vision.

Good Luck!

I go to wal-mart for my eye doctor. I find that wal-mart is just as good as going to a regular eye doctor. I get a years supply of two month disposable contacts and a check up for around $100.00.
The contacts are about $15. 00 a box. You get six contacts a box. (my eyes are two different prescriptions, so I have to purchase two boxes) You simply throw them away and get out a new pair every couple of months. (you have to take them out every night) You only have to visit the eye doctor once a year if you have no eye issues. And as long as you have a current prescription, you can go and get more contacts at wal-mart anytime you need them.
You will find if you get contacts that you probably will not wear your glasses hardly at all. I have had them since I was a freshman in high school and am now 32 years old. I have never had an eye infection, ripped one, or lost them out of my eyes. If you are responsilble and take care of them, you will not have any trouble having contacts. But make sure you have a back up pair of glasses just in case!
I do not know about your insurance, I would guess probably no, but that depends on the state you live in!

Good luck!
