How High of a Prescription is This?!
Question: How High of a Prescription is This!?
I have a -13!.00 on both eyes!. I cannot function without contacts/glasses!. I can only see colors without it!. I've always known I was pretty near sighted, but when mentioning it to a friend, she thought I was exagerating the strength!. Is it really that high!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Your refractive error is extremely high!. Although 13!.00 diopters of myopia (nearsighted, shortsighted) vision can be corrected with glasses or contacts, there are other even more important concerns!.
Myopia is commonly caused by the eye being elongated!. The cornea and lens focus objects in front of the retina; the light sensitive membrane at the back of the eye!. It is the elongation that is of concern!.
Although the eye is elongated, the retina is not similarly enlarged to cover the extra surface area!. This means the retina is stretched and stressed to cover the inside back of the eye!. This internal stress can contribute to retinal detachment, which can lead to partial vision loss or worse!.
